The Details…

Just what is MUGS-TMC?

The MicroStation User's Group of Seattle is a local community charter of The MicroStation Community (TMC)- a national user's group of Bentley MicroStation CAD software. This charter group consists of MicroStation users who live and work in the Seattle and greater Puget Sound area. The members use the software for business and personal objectives and/or who have an interest of expanding their knowledge of the software.

History

Historically, the group was formed about 10 years ago (1990-approximately), and was originally associated as a special interest group or northern outreach of the NWLUG centered in Portland, Oregon(a 3-4 hour drive for most Puget Sounders). Meetings were held locally in Seattle on a somewhat regular basis- usually once a month. There were periods of high and low interest which affected the attendance of the group, but it continued on serving the users in the area. Then in 1994, it was reorganized through the efforts of Gino Cortesi and called the MicroStation User's Group of Seattle (MUGS). In February 1996, MUGS was recognized as an official charter group of The MicroStation Community, and currently goes by the title of MUGS-TMC. Recognized previous chair holders, presidents and active individuals of the group are Walter Metzger, Glenn Burnett, Babu Parayil, Patrick Pirtle, Gino Cortesi, and many others who were active in keeping this group going.

Meetings

Typically, we select a main topic or item for discussion at our meetings, have a presentation or display of the topic, and then allow open discussions concerning aspects of the topic. The agenda can be flexible depending on interests from the users, and users are encouraged to submit their suggestions for main topic discussions at upcoming meetings. In addition to a selected topic, there will be demonstrations of new software and applications that may be of interest to users, and also open discussion periods on any topic of MicroStation that users would like to bring up. With this flexibility, users may explore new ways of using MicroStation, and even resolve problems or difficulties they may be having with the software.

User Presentations

Users may volunteer to present a specific topic of MicroStation that they are familiar with, or show some way of using the software that may be unique to their working environment- such as developed applications, workspace customizations, standards and procedures. Also, there will be plenty of opportunities for users to show off their great work in the flashier side of MicroStation- i.e. 3D modeling, rendering, animations, etc. It is our plan for this year, that we have presentations from some of the following organizations: Bentley, Intergraph, MicroSoft, regional software and hardware vendors and of course: TMC.

When?

THE GROUP MEETS ONCE A MONTH- We meet on the first Tuesday of the month. Location of the meetings may vary, depending on the topic of the agenda. Time of the meeting is usually around 6:30PM, and may last until 8-9PM. Both the location and time of the meetings will be announced to all users via this web page, or for those individuals who so desire, an announcement may be sent via email (preferred) or snail mail.

Benefits

The opportunity of meeting with various individuals of like-minded working environments has proven to be a benefit to all users. If you are interested, then come on by to our next meeting to take a look. Also, look at the membership list to see how many individuals (and companies) are represented. This is a great way to network with users of one of the fastest growing user's groups in the nation.
